Composite Door Installation in Blandford Forum

We recently completed this composite front door installation in Blandford Forum, Dorset, replacing the property’s existing entrance door with a new composite door and glazed side panel.

With an attractive woodgrain finish, decorative glazing and a clean white outer frame, the new entrance works particularly well alongside the traditional stonework of the property. As well as improving the appearance of the entrance, the new door provides the security, insulation and low-maintenance benefits you’d expect from a modern composite door.

This particular installation also required careful finishing around the existing stonework to achieve the standard of finish we wanted.

Surveyed and Measured by Kenny

Every good installation starts with an accurate survey.

Kenny visited the property in Blandford Forum to measure the existing opening and work out the correct sizes for the replacement door, frame and side panel.

With replacement doors, particularly in older properties with stone openings, getting these measurements right is essential. The new frame needs enough tolerance to be installed and correctly levelled while avoiding unnecessarily large gaps that then have to be covered with trims or excessive sealant.

The door was measured perfectly for the existing opening, giving Kyle a great starting point when it came to the installation.

Carefully Removing the Existing Door

Removing an old door isn’t simply a case of getting it out as quickly as possible.

Because this entrance sits within existing stonework, Kyle took particular care when removing the old door and frame to minimise disturbance to the surrounding stone.

Taking a little more time during the removal can make a significant difference to the finished job. Avoiding unnecessary damage to stonework, plaster and internal finishes means we’re able to concentrate on producing a neat installation rather than repairing damage that could have been avoided in the first place.

Once the old frame had been carefully removed, the opening could be prepared ready for the new composite door.

Installing the New Composite Door

The new frame was positioned within the opening, carefully levelled and securely fixed before the door was set up and adjusted.

Correct installation is just as important as choosing a quality door. A composite door needs to sit correctly within its frame so that it opens and closes smoothly, seals properly against the weather and allows the locking system to operate as intended.

The accurate measurements taken during the survey meant the new door and side panel fitted the opening exactly as planned.

The finished entrance combines the timber-style appearance of the composite door with a contrasting white frame and a large glazed side panel. The side panel also helps retain plenty of natural light inside the property while giving the whole entrance a more substantial appearance.

Scribing the Trims Into the Stonework

One of the most important details on this particular installation was the finishing around the outside of the frame.

Stone openings are rarely perfectly straight. Simply putting a straight piece of trim against uneven stone can leave inconsistent gaps and make an otherwise good installation look unfinished.

Instead, we scribed the trims individually to follow the contours of the existing stonework.

This involves carefully shaping the trims so that they follow the irregular surface of the stone rather than trying to hide the differences with large amounts of sealant.

It’s a relatively small detail, but it’s exactly the type of finishing work that makes a noticeable difference when you stand back and look at the completed entrance.

The result is a much cleaner transition between the new white frame and the original stonework while retaining the character of the property.

A Composite Door That Suits the Property

The customer chose a traditional woodgrain-effect composite door which complements the surrounding natural stone extremely well.

Four glazed sections in the upper part of the door introduce additional light without turning the entire entrance into a glazed door, while the larger side panel brings even more daylight into the hallway.

The traditional appearance means the door doesn’t look out of place on the property, despite providing the benefits associated with a modern replacement entrance door.
