How Much Do New Windows Cost in Dorset? A 2026 Guide

“How much do new windows cost?” is the question we are asked more than any other, and it is one of the most searched home improvement questions in the country. It is also one of the hardest to answer in a single number, because two windows of the same size can be very different in price depending on the style, finish and how they are fitted.

This guide explains what new windows typically cost in 2026, what changes the price, and what homeowners in Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Sherborne, Blandford and across North Dorset and South Wiltshire should look for before they choose.

What do new windows cost in 2026?

National cost guides currently put supply and fit prices for a standard casement window at roughly £450 to £750 for uPVC, £800 to £1,500 for aluminium and £900 to £1,800 for timber. For a typical three-bedroom house with eight to twelve windows, that works out at around £4,000 to £7,500 in uPVC.

Those figures are a useful starting point, but they are averages. A small bathroom window and a large bay are very different jobs, and the style and finish you choose will make the biggest difference to the final figure.

What changes the price of new windows?

The style of window

A standard casement is the most affordable option. Flush casements, where the sash closes level with the frame like a traditional timber window, cost more because the frame is more involved to make and fit. Sash windows and bay windows sit at the higher end again. If you are considering flush casements, our guide to what flush casement windows cost goes into more detail.

Colour and finish

White is the starting point. Colours such as agate grey, anthracite, black, cream and sage, or woodgrain finishes, add to the cost, and having one colour outside and another inside (a popular choice, such as grey outside and white inside) adds a little more. Grey and heritage colours are among the most requested finishes we fit right now, particularly on older stone and brick homes.

Glazing

Every window we fit is A-rated double glazing as standard. Triple glazing is becoming more common and typically adds around £100 to £300 per window. Acoustic glass, obscure glass for bathrooms and toughened glass where safety rules require it also affect the price.

Bars and details

Georgian bars, astragal bars, decorative hardware such as monkey tail handles and matching trims and cills all add to the finished look, and to the cost. On a cottage or period home, they are often what makes the difference between a window that looks right and one that does not.

The installation

This is the part that is easiest to overlook when comparing quotes. Old stone cottages with deep reveals, uneven openings or rotten timber lintels take longer to fit properly than a modern house. A good quote will be based on a proper survey, not a guess from the outside.

Do you need planning permission for new windows in Dorset?

For most homes, replacing windows with similar ones does not need planning permission. It is different if your home is listed, or in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, which covers parts of Shaftesbury, Mere, Sherborne and many villages in the area. In those cases the council will usually want replacements that closely match the originals, which is where a flush casement or a heritage sash window is often the right choice. Kenny will advise on what is likely to be accepted when he surveys your home.

Is now a good time to replace your windows?

Yes. Windows can be fitted all year round, and each opening is only left open for a short time while the new frame goes in, so your home stays warm. Many homeowners choose the autumn so their new windows are in before the coldest months. Replacing older windows also tends to cut down on draughts and condensation, and can help with your heating bills. We explain more in are your windows letting the heat out?

Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest option

New windows should last for decades, so it is worth comparing quotes like for like. Check what product is being quoted, who is fitting it, whether the company is FENSA registered, and what guarantee you are getting. Our guide on how to choose a double glazing company covers the nine things we would check before signing with anyone, including us.

Every window we fit is installed by our own team and backed by our insurance-backed guarantee, so you are protected for the full guarantee period.
